Paired Reading
What is Paired Reading?
Paired reading is a fluency strategy where a teacher creates reading partnerships between two students- a proficient reader is paired with a developing reader. The partners practice their oral reading skills and are given the chance to read fluently with a peer, giving feedback and encouragement. During paired reading, students are expected to read aloud with expression, prosody, at an appropriate pace. Through peer support and guidance, students are able to achieve at a higher level within their Zone of Proximal Development, or ZPD (Miller & Veach, 2011) Paired reading allows guided learning, which follow's Vygotsky's theory of the Zone of Proximal Development. Vyotsky states that peer interation is an "effective way of developing skills and strategies" (McLeod, 2013) especially when students with developing skills are paired with their more proficient peers. |
How can paired reading be used in a middle school classroom?
There are many methods of paired reading, and all are beneficial to students who are receiving guidance and support. Paired reading can be done between vaired ability groupings, a teacher and student, or parents with their children at home. Paired reading works to build fluency in readers in an engaging and challenging way (NMSA, 2010). |
