Tape-Assisted Reading
What is Tape-Assisted Reading?
Tape-assisted reading is a fluency strategy where a student is given a tape recording and matching text to model and guide fluency practice. In this strategy, the student first listens to the recording while silently reading along. After the first read-through, the student then restarts the recording and reads along with expression and prosody at an appropriate rate. Tape-assisted reading provides students with a clear demonstration of what fluent reading sounds like, as well as an opportunity to practice reading aloud with fluency. Miller & Veatch (2011) state that in order to "integrate 'deep fluency' into their everyday literacy, students must be given the opportunity to have guided practice in context." This fluency strategy provides two essential components of fluency instruction: modeling and guided practice. How can tape-assisted reading be used in a middle school? This fluency strategy is a form of Generated Read Aloud, and can come in many forms such as audio CDs, online audio recordings, and digital/MP3 players. Research shows that modeled fluency is an important part of developing fluency, and it much less present in middle school than in elementary school (Miller & Veatch, 2011). |
Studies show that tape-assisted reading is shown to be most effective with struggling students and English Language Learners (Rasinski, 2009). Tape-assisted reading can provide additional support to the struggling students in middle school who can benefit from additional fluency modeling and guidance.
This fluency strategy provides engaging fluency practice to improve fluency and comprehension in readers. It can be used in any middle school content area where auido recordings of the text is available to the students. |
