Newspapers in Education (NIE)
What is Newspapers in Education (NIE)?
Newspapers in Education, or NIE, is a nation-wide program that aims to "promote and increase our children's literacy by using the newspaper as a teaching tool" (Halligan, 2014). The Newspapers in Education program shows positive results and increased test scores, especially in low-income, minority, and ELL students (Halligan, 2014). This program provides copies of the local newspaper to the school community, providing relevant and engaging informational text for the students to read. It is beneficial for students to encounter all kinds of texts, and engaging for students to read real-world stories about the city, state, country, or world. The Newspapers in Education program is a variation of Wide, Independent reading, which exposes students to a wide variety of content (textbook). Reading a newspaper provides students with the opportunity to read materials from various content areas while practicing their fluency. The NIE program also allows students to be informed community members, and reading informational texts will develop skills that students will need in high school and college courses. The newspapers can be used in many different ways in the classroom. For example, photos in the newspaper can be used as a starting point for a creative writing activity that will be presented with fluency. Other activities include choral reading the newspaper, partner reading, or a read aloud of the newspaper. The main idea of the NIE program is to expose students to the newspaper in hopes of raising children's literacy. |
"I think it is important for everyone to read the newspaper, because people always say that knowledge is power, and that you should know what's going on"
-Isabel Hurtado Ortiz, 9th grade "When a child grows up applying the Newspapers in Education, he or she grows up to be a cultured adult." - Principal Hernan Dario Jaramillo How can I differentiate Newspapers in Education (NIE)?
This program can be differentiated based on the various ways to use the newspaper in the classroom. For example, the newspaper can be split up into content areas or articles and the article can be assigned to ability-based groupings taking into consideration the vocabulary demands of the article. |
